Our Journey in Summary
Historically, The Drum (now the Legacy Centre of Excellence) was awarded Birmingham City Council’s Black History Month commission, delivering the programme from 2009–2015. After The Drum closed in March 2016, Blackstory Partnership was formed to respond to the City’s BHM 2016 opportunity. Our proposal was successful, and since then we’ve produced Birmingham’s annual BHM brochures (2016–2024) and programmed the City’s official launch events (2016–2022).
Last year, we shared that Birmingham City Council would no longer commission BHM programmes. So how did this year’s brochure come to life? Through commitment, diligence, community engagement, donations, advertising support, and strong partnerships with like-minded organisations – we made it happen!
Black History Month UK Theme 2025 “STANDING FIRM IN POWER AND PRIDE” This theme celebrates the strength, resilience, and achievements of the Black community – honouring past contributions while looking to the future. Power recognises the leadership, influence, and vision of Black people who have shaped history and broken barriers. Pride celebrates culture, heritage, and excellence – embracing history and identity with confidence. Building Futures from the Past encourages us to learn from history to create a more equitable and prosperous future.(Source: www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk)
The events, exhibitions and articles featured in this brochure reflect the theme, showcasing how Black individuals and communities continue to inspire change and celebrate cultural identity with pride.
